Navy dispatches 4,000-kg relief goods for quake-hit

KARACHI - Pakistan Navy continues to utilise all its resources to provide relief to the earthquake victims of Balochistan. All efforts are being made for swift provision of relief and rescue support to the earthquake affectees.

In addition to the 4,000-kg relief goods which were already dispatched via PN Fokker and helicopters, approximately 4500-kg of relief goods were dispatched through two additional sorties of PN Fokker during last two days.

The relief goods contain dry ration, medicines, drinking water and more than 200 family sized tents. The PN helicopters are still carrying out rescue operations and pulling out dead and injured people of the quake-hit areas. The injured are transported to the PN hospitals at Ormara and Karachi for better medical treatment.
The teams of PN hydrographers are working in quake-hit areas to assess the possibility of more aftershocks and vulnerability of fishermen and mariners of the area due to the emergence of new islets in Gwadar West Bay and in sea area of Ras Basol. Main shipping lanes are well clear from these islets, however, warnings have been issued for safety of fishermen and mariners.

These islets are mainly composed of mud and it is expected that they will erode in monsoon due to strong waves. In view of large magnitude of the earthquake and its aftershocks, the possibility of emergence of similar kind of islets/submerged elevations along the Makran coast cannot be ruled out.
