HEC awards 2,000 scholarships to students from Balochistan, Fata




The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has awarded 2,000 scholarships to students belonging to restive areas of the country, including Balochistan and Fata for bachelor and masters, and an additional 600 MPhil/PhD scholarships have been approved for Balochistan.

According to information obtained by this correspondent, the HEC announced 2,000 more scholarships for talented youth of Balochistan and Fata. The HEC is also awarding 8,000 Need-Based Scholarship Programmes for financially-constrained Pakistani students. The HEC organised a ceremony here on Tuesday in connection with completion of its 10 years.

Executive Director HEC  Dr Sohail highlighted HEC's achievements in higher education sector during last decade and said that at least six Pakistani universities were now ranked among top 300 Asian universities while two Pakistani universities were now ranked among the top 300 science and technology institutions in the world. He said that HEC's achievements included spread of higher education to every region of Pakistan with an increase in number of university campuses from 168 to 258 and establishment of 41 new universities, increase in student enrolment at universities from 330,000 to over a million and encouraging women to get higher education, increasing the percentage of women enrolled in universities from 36% to 46%, he added.

He said: "HEC has introduced a digital library in the country, providing access to 75% of the world's literature (23,000 e-journals and 45,000 e-books). The HEC's Video Conference Network is established in all public sector universities, covering 31 cities, the network is recognised one of the largest interactive networks."
