Thursday,  Quetta—Governor Balochistan Muhammad Khan Achakzai Tuesday urged the universities to promote scientific research in different fields. He was addressing at 9th Convocation of the Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS), here.

Chief Minister Balochistan, Dr. Abdul Malik Baloch, Vice Chancellor, BUITEMS, Eng. Ahmed Farooq Khan Bazai and others were also present on the occasion.

The Governor said that scientific research has central and significant importance in the development of any country and nation, adding that the teachers and graduates of the universities should play their role in the fields of scientific research.

He said that law and order situation had improved in Balochistan after the incumbent government came into power. He said that the federal government had extended its collaboration in restoration of peace in the province. He said that Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhawa had been contacted for playing his role and influence for recovery of abducted chief of Kasi tribe, Nawab Abdul Zahir Kasi.

He distributed degrees and prizes among 700 graduates of the BUITEMS.

They are provided opportunities to equip themselves with knowledge and confidence of facing and handling the challenges of practical/professional life. With a vision for being among one of the leading universities of the world accessible to all, BUITEMS clearly devised its admission policy allocating 90 per cent seats reserved for the students of Balochistan and 10 per cent on all-Pakistan open merit basis.

This policy has been duly approved by the statutory bodies of the university. The candidates hailing from Balochistan, who fulfill the basic eligibility criteria for admission, if not admitted in programme of their first choice, are allowed admission in other programmes of studies relevant to their qualifications.

As such, the candidates from Balochistan who meet the minimum criteria of Pakistan Engineering Council and other accreditation councils are not denied the privilege of the university.

Thus 90 per cent of BUITEMS’s student intake is from Balochistan including the remote areas. After graduating from BUITEMS, these students have brought significant change in living standards of their families and are seen as role models by youth of their areas, motivating them for acquiring higher education and improving economic profile of their region.

BUITEMS was ranked fourth in computer science and IT category by the HEC and earned ISO 9001-2008 certification in 2011. All academic procedures are automated by campus management solution. Every third student gets financial assistance. A farm is dedicated to research in life sciences at its Chiltan campus.

BUITEMS has maintained steady growth in physical facilities, human resources, nature and number of laboratories, number of programmes of study and the student body.

A sizable number of faculty members have been awarded scholarships for MS, MS leading to PhD and PhD studies in reputed national and international universities, either sponsored by faculty development programme of BUITEMS/HEC or by winning Fulbright scholarship, while some of them have been awarded scholarships either by the Australian or the Chinese government.

The vice-chancellor of BUITEMS, Ahmed Farooq Bazai, is an internationally acclaimed educationist in the fields of engineering, management and academic administration. He has been recently conferred three prestigious international awards: Visionary Leader Award by Asian Confederation of Businesses, Outstanding Contribution to Education Award 2012 by World Education Congress, and International Socrates Award by Europe Business Assembly which has also chosen BUITEMS as one of the best representatives of national education.

He is a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. As vice-chancellor of BUITEMS, he introduced good governing practices, hierarchical administrative and academic structures in the university.

BUITEMS has emerged as a beacon for the youth of Balochistan and is being recognized as a premier seat of learning in the region.

First female scholar from Balochistan completes PhD

The first female scholar from Balochistan University of Information Technology and Management Sciences (BUITMS), Quetta, Sarwat Afridi, has completed her PhD from France under the Higher Education Commission (HEC) scholarship scheme.

Sarwat has completed her PhD from Université Aix-Marseille II, France. In 2008, Sarwat was awarded HEC overseas scholarship for France. From June 2008 to August 2008, she completed an intensive French language course for two months at ILCF (Institut de Langue et de Culture Françaises / Institut Catholique de Paris), France. In September 2008, Sarwat was registered in PhD at Université Aix-Marseille II, France, under the supervision of Professor Dr Pascal Rihet.

She completed her PhD in July 2012 titled “Influence of candidate gene variants on Plasmodium Falciparum Malaria related phenotypes and functional effects of NCR3-412 polymorphism associated to Malaria.” During her PhD, she worked on diverse projects related to genomics, bioinformatics and biochemistry. The main focus of her research was genetic analysis of resistance to malaria.

The overall objective of her work was to identify genes, which are involved in resistance or susceptibility to malaria in humans, and to identify human genetic factors which have been previously associated to resistance to malaria and have the tendency to influence the level of malarial antibodies thus ultimately leading to protection against malaria. Moreover, she also worked on functional evaluation of NCR3 polymorphism, previously associated to Malaria. All the results obtained help illustrate the contribution of bioinformatics, genetics and genomics in understanding the mechanism involved in resistance to human Malaria. During her PhD research she managed to publish three articles in international journals while two are under process of submission. She also presented her research work in the form of poster in two institutions. She has successfully graduated and returned to Pakistan and have rejoined her parent university.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) is also planning to award 600 Masters leading to PhD scholarships for the natives of Balochistan province. The government has recently approved the project under the “Aghaz-e-Haqooq-e-Balochistan Package” on August 30, 2012.

BUITEMS becomes the 4th best university of Pakistan

Rawalpindi—The Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS) Quetta has clinched fourth position among top ranking universities of the country in Computer Science and Information Technology. This achievement is a major leap forward in BUITEMS’s journey towards attainment of quality and excellence in the higher education sector, as per the data recently released by the Higher Education Commission.

This brings the university one step closer to achieving the international ranking setting world-class standards of educational excellence. BUITEMS Quetta a premier public sector university in Balochistan is pioneering and providing education in the emerging fields of information and Communication Technology, Life Science and Information Engineering, Business Management, Arts and Basic Science and Social Science since 2002, said Vice Chancellor BUITEMS Engr Ahmed Farooq Bazai said in an interview with APP here Sunday.

“Since the ranking was based on the QS World Universities Ranking Model, we see a strong possibility that your university may also quality amongst the world leading universities in the QS ranking. I would therefore, strongly urge you to participate in these ranking so that more Pakistani Universities including yours listed among the best university in the world,” a recent letter written to Vice Chancellor of BUITEMS by Dr Javaid Leghari, Chairman HEC read.

The university has been creating opportunities from meeting the contemporary needs of higher education to face social and technological challenges, Engr Bazai said. The university is playing a vital role for the promotion of quality education in the region with its dynamic team exhibited through its students, teachers and administration.
